BSC Newsletter. 9th December 09
Hi folks. Eddie style big wave greetings from BSC towers.

Did you see the photos from Waimia? Sharpy has a bunch of shots on his site. Holy cow! We've even got some good swell hitting our own shores right now and in an extraordinary turn of fate the forecast for tomorrow is light winds. Get on it while you can.

Time for a quick update on BSC manoeuvres this month and the start of next year:

Firstly, a reminder that the Christmas bash is this Friday so don't expect to find many people in the pub on Thursday night. There will probably be a modest gathering the week after and then the next official meeting will be the 7th of January. Then on the 21st of January we have the club AGM. (Be there or else).

Next, a repeat of the message on the forum about the ISA comp judging course that Mark Parry is planning over the evenings of the 28th and 29th of January in Bristol. It's free to attend and we've got 4 people signed up but we need a few more bodies to make his trip worth while so post up on the forum if you're into it.

Also, the RNLI are running a "Swim a mile" sponsorship campaign to raise funds for lifeguards in the south west. We thought it would be cool for the club to get involved and Jo has secured the use of Bristol South pool. The lofty goal of swimming 100 miles in an hour looks like a tall order but with enough bodies we should at least be able to break the speed limit so please post up on the forum and if you've got any mates who would be up for it then stick them down too.

Next up, Pete has another instalment of his very occasional "icons of surfing" series (nicked from the pages of the Encyclopaedia of surfing). Take it away Pete:

This round of icons of surfing takes a look at the bed rock of our passion...... style.

Lets get one thing straight (well in my opinion anyway), surfing is not cool, though there are cool people who surf:-) The one thing surfing is about is style.

As a result i've decide to write a few notes on some waterpeople who I believe are gurus of style. Now there are surfers who are arguably more successful, extreme or even better, but that's missing the point. So here goes in no particular order:

Harry Frye, aka Skip, skipper or Skip Frye. One of the leading lights the Shortboard revolution in the late sixties in California. Though never a world champion he was a very competitive comp surfer nationally and internationally. His style has been described as "the master of the undervalued art of trim - finding and holding a pure angle in the fastest part of the wave", "something of a minimalist..... all function, flow and speed". On land Skipper was pure 60's california surfer, with combed back white blond hair, a friendly grin, and a pair of black ray ban shades.

Skip went on to shape for another arbiter of style Rob Machado and invent a kind of cross country surfing using specially designed 12 foot longboards. This involves riding each wave as long as possible, paddling on to an adjacent break, riding, and moving on to another spot - often string together numerous different breaks as he travelled along the coast.

Tune into the next newsletter for another candidate from Pete's style guide.

That's your lot folks. See you all at the party on Friday
