| Greetings crew. This week we've got a couple of quick reminders and a few pearls of wisdom. Read on and get yo'self learned... Firstly, this is the final reminder about tomorrows AGM. Thursday 21st, 8pm at the Nova Scotia. Bring your bright ideas and your voting hand (or finger). The Nova does bar food so if you want something to nibble to stave off the boredom then give them a call on 0117 929 7994 and place your order. (Apparently they do an excellent Tajine.) Next up we have a confirmed date for the sponsored swim - Friday 19th February from about 6:30 at Bristol South pool in Bedminster. There's a disclaimer form on the forum to download and return to the R.N.L.I. office - "I promise not to drown during a charity swim for the RNLI." Sponsor forms are still in the works - we'll let you know as soon as we have them. The Bristol RNLI branch has offered their support on the night and their PR team are talking about TV and newspapers so if you want to get on the telly in your swim suit (optional) then sign up ASAP. There's a facebook event for this so stick your name on that or let Andy know directly if you don't do facebook.
Next, a new occasional feature: Ric's tip of the week.
Tip #1 - Touch the deck during takeoffs.
Next time you're surfing try this exercise. Once you've popped up and you're taking the drop, crouch down and touch the deck next to your leading foot with your trailing hand. It does a few things that help set up a good wave. Your weight will shift forward which will give you more speed. Your centre of gravity will be lower giving you more stability. Your shoulders will be square to the board so your body faces forward. Finally, the time it takes to crouch down and touch the board will postpone your first turn, sending you further down the face and giving you even more speed for that smooth, drawn-out carve off the bottom. Give it a shot and let us know how it goes. (Apparently this advice comes third hand from Johno. He said the first time he tried it he got so much unexpected speed he shot clean over the back of the lip.)
Finally, here's the second instalment of Pete's "Style Masters" series. This week it's Rob "the mob" Machado.
This surfer is an associate of Skip Frye (our inaugural style master), possessor of an distinctive mop of hair, stared as a penguin in surfs up and performs as a budding amateur musician. Laconic goofyfooted Mr R Machado is also generally held as the smoothest - riding surfer of his generation. Even though Rob was a key player in the new school of surfing, he seemed like a man out of time with his riding based on flow, form, subtlety and composure. The bro with the 'fro often arranges his arms and legs into near balletic positions and occasionally slouched into a Zen-like motionless stance while speeding across the wave face. Later in his career Rob was able to draw these lines at heavy Hawaiian 12 to 15 foot waves. Machado's cool demeanour and angular features helped make him a surf-chic trendsetter and featured in more beachwear ads than virtually anyone of the period. Supremely photogenic Rob has appeared in over 50 surf films and has become the darling of both the mainstream and alternative surf media.
Cool. That's your lot. See you in the Nova for 8pm.
